Motorbike ambulances

All the six motorbike ambulances in health centres continue to work well and serve pregnant mothers with complications.

SNNPR Regional Health Bureau

The link has agreed to continue support training of HEWs in the region in safe delivery and newborn care.  The link has recommended that RHB should consider (1) as the Motorbike ambulances are making a huge difference in transfer of pregnant mothers with complications to requesting support with more of these from larger NGOs.  (2) Actively consider urgent introduction of MISOPROSTOL, to help reduce maternal mortality from PPH.  (3) To consider treatment completely free treatment at all stages of pregnancy at all levels.

Two more lives saved... Print

Metasebia writes: "Tayech Ermias is a 25 year old primigravida. She lives 5km away from Shone health centre. She knew that last year one woman near her home died in labour. The woman could not get to the health center in time because of lack of transport. After many long hours in labour by the time her family could bring her to the health center she had already passed away."

Motorbike ambulance saves two more lives.

"Tayech heard about the motorbike ambulance during her antenatal check up. When she went to labour around 4:00pm her family called to Eshetu, the motorbike ambulance driver, who came within 20 minutes and brought her to the health center. Dawit, the midwife (trained by the link in October 2009) helped her to give birth around 6:00pm to a 3kg healthy baby boy. She stayed at the health center for 3 hours. During these 5 hours the driver waited for her to take her back to her home. She is very happy with whole service and was keen to come back to the health centre to tell her story."

Shemsia Sultan of Chobare village Print
Written by Biku Ghosh
Tuesday, 03 February 2009 09:26

Last week in Chobare village 18 year old Shemsia Sultan was going to have her first baby. Unfortunately her labour went on for many long hours without any progress and by the evening she was getting weaker. The nearest medical help was in Alaba health centre 40 kilometers away through poor road conditions and the nearest hospital was over 100km away. Shemsia’s family had heard of the recent arrival of motorbike ambulance in Alaba health centre and the training of the midwives there. They telephoned the health centre in the middle of the night and soon the motorbike ambulance was on its way. Later that night Shemsia gave birth in the health centre, with help from the trained midwife, to her 3kg baby girl.

Thanks to the Link donating the ambulance and training the staff, she did not become part of the statistics for maternal death, still so high in Ethiopia due to lack of adequate facilities and trained staff.

So far the two motorbike ambulances donated by the link to Yirgacheffe and in Alaba have made similar 50 journeys in the last two months. The third motorbike ambulance for Wondogenet is on its way to Ethiopia this week.
