At the Hawassa Referral Hospital / College of Health Sciences

  • Skills training for the midwives in the hospital and nearby Bushelo hospital– 15 trained
  • Basic surgical skills course for 15 2nd year MSc Health officer students and surgical trainees, including bowel and vascular anastomosis
  • Workshop on Advanced Trauma and Fracture management for 15 2nd year MSc students
  • Skills update for 30 theatre and recovery nurses – 30 trained
  • Clinical Lectures for the medical students in Urology, General surgery, Trauma and Orthopaedics.  
  • Needs assessment visit by British Association of Urology International link (UROLINK)

At the rural health centres and health posts

  • Visited a model health post in Gedeo zone
  • Training of 90 Community Health Extension workers in antenatal, delivery and postnatal and newborn care
  • Donation of 50 bicycles to be used in the health posts in Gedeo zone
  • Evaluation visit and donation of essential items to Yirgacheffe, Alaba, Shone and Wondogenet health centres  
  • Meeting with the Womens’ Association in Wondogenet to discuss their request for support to develop small businesses by the rural women to generate emergency funds. These funds to be used for emergency medical care and schooling of their children.

Life Expectancy at Birth

Men on average live for only 50 yrs and women for 53 yrs. In UK men and women live for 77yrs and 81yrs respectively.
